Theory Of Writing

This is my theory of writing.

Writing is one’s self expression through words and letters to tell a story. It can be scary, fantasized, mysterious, non fiction and many other genres. It can take readers into a whole different universe to experience things that are impossible to experience like gathering an army of Greek gods against their creators as told in the tales of Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. Everyone can read through books and writings no matter how young or old one is. Many people today start with The Cat In The Hat by Dr. Seuss when they were barely able to form words. For me, writing was just to write simple stories and assignments for school but it is much deeper than that.

I thought of writing as story writing and as a job to do for people to create entertainment. It was just a means to and end that didn’t mean much. However over the last few years and taking this course, writing is so much more than words on paper. It acts as a portal to connect others in different situations that can range from a bizarre unrealistic universe to being in real life situations. People reading these meaningful stories help people’s imagination flourish as well as their critical thinking. Reading the different types of writing in conjunction to art pieces help me understand the importance of storytelling to expand people’s mind.

Books that I read when I was a book worm gives me such a nostalgic feeling and I felt that feeling in my Graphic Novel course in high school. I was inspired by my teacher Paul to start reading again because I lost the interest in my pre teen years as video games occupied my mind. We were studying storytelling through graphics and composition of drawings so I got a library card from The New York Public Library and went everywhere for books from Manhattan to the Bronx to Brooklyn. I took doors out of a small dresser I found in my basement to fill it with books I bought and borrowed books from the library to read one by one. That course inspired me to become an animator and a reader again. It changed the way I looked at writing as I disregarded it when watching films and even playing games. I became more analytical of things that didn’t seem right or try to come up with a better story in my head.

This new knowledge of what writing means opened up my mind to what I knew about people and the world. Not everybody thought the way I thought and it challenged my thinking. When it came to politics, when it came to philosophy, when it came social issues I would always challenge my knowledge and try to find the most well rounded view that would take in ideas from everyone. Understanding what writing is to me makes me sympathize with other writers who have different reasons to write like one of my friends.
